I think it is fair to say that much of the freedom we have enjoyed on the Internet is under attack. Politicians, specifically conservative politicians, are calling for more control over what people are allowed to look at on the Internet. Specifically, conservatives want to stop the use of porn. Supposedly, it is an an effort to "protect children." All these politicians want, though, is more control. There is no way to stop the distribution of anything on the Internet, only take down the major fronts.
I grow increasingly frustrated as I watch neo-conservatives impress their Christian ideologies on weak-minded individuals. They hear that kids can look at boobies online and become outraged, when they themselves looked at boobies in porn magazines from a young age. Additionally, they do so likely without the awareness that they could stop their children from looking at inappropriate sites by utilizing parental controls present in almost every device their kid uses. It's very easy, but there just isn't much information to help those kinds of people. That's even to say if they care about their children that much.
Banning porn is not the answer to make the Internet "safer." Just like how banning a book in a high school only makes the kids want to read it more, banning porn will just force people to go to less safe websites to look at it. These politicians are fools to think that their laws can stop anything on the Internet, which is why there must be some ulterior motive. That motive is to gain control over what we see.
Attacking niche or fringe ideologies is often a way to gain control over everything else. Give them an inch, they take a mile. People are ignorant and can't see that, because they don't understand technology like the younger generation does. People don't understand the breadth of activity that really happens on the Internet; all of the different tools, software, videos, cloud services that can be accessed and utilized. They think that there can be a "one size fits all" solution, like a program that is executed and suddenly all of the porn is deleted. But that is not how it works, obviously.
There are so many different ways people can transmit information that the only way to regulate it is to essentially have an eye of Sauron watching all Internet traffic. We're really screwed if a government figures that one out. More likely, the world will become like China where each country gets their own special little version of the Internet, closed off from the rest of the world. That's what the neo-conservatives really want: an Internet where the only voice (the voice of God no less!) people can hear is that of the ruling political party's views. That's the wet dream of any self-obsessed politician.
There is no shame in talking about sexuality. These societal rules put upon us about our bodies and our beliefs is nothing but a way for us to be controlled (and they are also remnants of a society run entirely by Christians and other strange, sex-hating religions). Guilt and fear are the most powerful ways to get people to do what you want. They are the most evil ways to get people to do what you want. Neo-conservatives want to guilt people into thinking sex is bad, because the almighty God and Jesus said so.
Put on a mask and fight for something you believe in. There's no need for people to know who you are, you just have to tell them what you know. No singular ideology should be the only ruling force of everyone's mind. People should challenge everything they know. That is a truly freedom-loving ideal.
It may seem like a strange website to visit, but PORNBIZ.com actually covers a lot of what I say here, but more in-depth. Please, give it a read.
